Whether you’re looking to supplement your home-heating system or you just want to get a little warmer, it’s possible to do so without turning up the furnace. Here are a few small and simple heating ideas you can use this winter to help stay warm.

Flannel Sheets

If you’re saving money by turning down the heat at night while you sleep, you can still stay warm and cozy in bed by using flannel sheets. Flannel sheets are usually made from a blend of synthetic and natural fibers, a wool and cotton blend, or cotton. The fibers in a flannel blanket are brushed to create small air pockets. When you climb into bed, your own body heat warms the air in these pockets and helps keep you comfortable while you’re sleeping.

Humidifier

During the summer, we do everything we can to remove humidity from the air. However, in the winter, using a humidifier to add moisture back into the air can actually help keep your house warmer. Not only that, it can also help cut down on dry skin and nosebleeds caused by dry air. If the temperature inside your home is 70 degrees and you have 10 percent humidity, it will feel like it’s 67 degrees. However, if it has 50 percent humidity, it will feel like it’s 69 degrees.

Space Heaters

While you can use a space heater to heat an entire room, they’re better suited for supplemental heat. Since newer models cost just four cents an hour to heat a room, they’re an energy-efficient choice for this extra heat. To safely run a space heater, make sure you place it on a flat and level surface that’s at least three feet away from furniture, curtains, and any other combustible materials. Don’t use an extension cord with a space heater unless it’s one that can be used in wet areas. Finally, never use a space heater in a bathroom or outside.

Electric Blankets

Like space heaters, electric blankets are a good option for personal heat if you use them safely and correctly. Most electric blankets come with an adjustable heat feature, so you can easily find your perfect comfort level. Some blankets even have dual controls so couples can adjust the temperature to their personal preference. Using an electric blanket at night can let you turn down the heat to save money. However, never use an electric blanket on a water bed, pull-out sofa, or adjustable bed.

Sunlight

One of the easiest and cheapest home-heating options you can use is from the sun. During the daylight hours, open your curtains or blinds on your south-facing windows to let in the warm sunlight and use it to heat your house. When the sun sets, close your curtains or blinds to help keep the heat inside.

If you’re looking to add some extra warmth to your home without turning up the furnace, try out one of these little heaters for more comfort without spending a lot of money.
